The Trojan War and the City of Troy
Troy was an ancient city located in modern day Turkey. Today, it is known as the archaeological site, Hisarlik. Excavations have shown that Troy was built and destroyed many times during its four thousand year history.
It is famous for a legendary tale of a war fought there which was described in Homer's "Iliad". In this tale, three goddesses had a beauty contest. A human judge, Paris of Troy, deemed Aphrodite the most attractive of the goddesses. In return, Aphrodite offered Paris a prize, Helen, the wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta. Menelaus was not happy about this. He and his allies came to Troy to wage war and retrieve Helen. The series of battles, called the Trojan War, lasted for ten years.
