Golden Age of Flight
The years between the first and second world wars were the “golden
age” of flight. WWI had seen the first airplanes in battle and
after the war, many of the pilots took up barnstorming, going town
to town to give flights to townspeople and put on shows. Other pilots
began to compete for speed and distance records, including the famous
1927 flight of Charles Lindbergh where he flew solo across the Atlantic,
a first in aviation history. Amelia Earhart followed in his footsteps
five years later as the first women to complete the journey. Advancements
in aviation technology continued, including the invention of the jet
engine in both Germany and England on the eve of WWII.
In this mini unit, you can learn how planes fly,
view planes from the golden age, see a timeline of
historical aviation events, find an airshow to watch
near your home, learn about two famous olden age
aviators – Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart – including
their solo transatlantic flights – and write
news stories about their adventures.
