Marco Polo

In 1271, the seventeen-year-old Venetian teen Marco Polo set off on a travel adventure with his merchant father and uncle that would take them throughout the Asian continent and span 24 years. Returning home as a middle-aged man, Marco Polo arrived during the war between Venice and Genoa and was taken prisoner and held in jail for a few months. It was during this time that he penned the story of his travels – tales of far-away lands that would capture the imaginations of Europeans who knew nothing about Asia – and remain popular well past his death.

In this mini unit, you can learn about Marco Polo’s home in Venice and his travels throughout Asia, read about the reception of his stories, see a timeline of his journey, watch modern explorers follow in his steps in a documentary film, test your Marco Polo knowledge and retrace his steps virtually yourself.
