Hadrian's
Wall Mini Unit Study
In A.D. 43, Roman Emperor Claudius sent four legions into modern-day
Britain (known as Britannia) in an effort to expand the Roman
Empire. Although the Romans were successful with their conquest,
over time they were stretched thin on soldiers in the north, or
present-day Scotland. After years of raids by various tribes,
Emperor Hadrian ordered a stone wall built as a defensive measure
and border marker in A.D. 122. Today, a large portion of the wall
still exists and is a popular tourist attraction in northern England.
In this mini unit study, you can: explore the story of Hadrian’s
Wall, read a short history of Roman Britain, browse through maps,
photos and videos of the wall, learn about Housesteads Fort along
the wall with a 3-D virtual tour, and play a game of identifying
ancient objects found near the wall.
