The Joust
Jousting, a combat game between knights that became popular in
the Middle Ages, was a feature of medieval tournaments throughout
Europe. In a jousting match, two men in armor rode towards
each other with the objective of knocking each other off their
horses, typically using a lance, although other weapons could
be used. Knights could earn a good sum at these matches while
polishing their combat skills in front of crowds of cheering
fans.
While knights have gone the way of the fortress castle and trebuchet,
jousting is still practiced today and promoted by organizations
such as the National Jousting Society. Many local Medieval and
Renaissance Fairs host jousting events as well and provide attendees
with a first-hand look at the historical sport.
In this mini unit, you can learn about the history of jousting,
find out how to joust, read about the joust activity at a medieval
tournament, watch a video from a modern jousting match, play
an interactive joust game online, find a live joust near you
and test your knowledge with a jousting trivia quiz.
