Tutankhamen
"King Tut" Mini Unit Study
Tutankhamen (King Tut) is one of the most studied of the Egyptian
pharaohs in modern times, especially by children. While he did not
make any great or lasting contributions to Egyptian civilization
during his short rule, children can identify with him because he
was only nine or ten years old when he became pharaoh.
The discovery of his tomb in 1922 was also one of the most celebrated
finds of Egyptology in this century. In this mini unit study, you
can: read about Tutankhamen's life, meet Howard Carter, the man
who discovered Tut's tomb, take a tour of his tomb, read first hand
accounts of the tomb's discovery, explore and write about your own
theories regarding Tutankhamen's death and make an Egyptian funerary
mask like the one he was mummified with.

Writing Activity
A good writing activity suggestion is found in this WebQuest - "Was
It Murder? The Death of King Tutankhamen:The Boy King".
If you don't have enough children to take the team approach this activity
suggests, it would be very easy to have one child read the articles
and either write a report, give an oral presentation or just have
a discussion about it.

The Murder of Tutankhamen: A True Story
When I see resources recommended for homeschoolers in various publications,
they are usually either materials for the kids or some sort of how-to
book for the parents. Instead, this is a fun book recommendation
for the parents, particularly those whose children are studying
ancient Egypt this year.
I don't know about you, but I like to read as much as my son does.
We are both fascinated by history and often have long discussions
about obscure historical facts or figures. I often try to follow
along with his studies with learning of my own - doing so seems
to make for much better discussions.
The Murder of Tutankhamen by Bob Brier is a great read. Yes, it
covers Tutankhamen and theories about his death specifically, but
he also gives a lot of background and detail on life in ancient
Egypt in a compelling way. The writing is also easy to follow, which
is unusual for most academics. Maybe I'm an intellectual lightweight,
but I've bought books on interesting topics by PhD's that have put
me right to sleep.
I picked up this book after watching the video series, The History
of Ancient Egypt, by the Teaching Company. The professor was none
other than Bob Brier. His passion and excitement for Egyptology
made for some great viewing for our household, so when I came across
his book, I had to buy it.
I wasn't disappointed and you won't be either.
