France endured many years of poor harvests during the eighteenth century. Shortages of wheat, rye, and other grains created hardship for France’s poor, who relied on bread as the main portion of their diet. On October 5,1789, a group of women organized a protest at the city hall in Paris. They were angry at having their pleas for bread ignored while the French aristocracy lived in luxury. The demonstration turned destructive and violent as the mob of women marched to Versailles to demand that King Louis XVI supply bread for the hungry people of Paris.
