SONGS OF THE STREETS: MUSIC OF THE REVOLUTION

The music we love is very personal. Music often reflects the
way we are feeling and the things we are experiencing at a particular
time in our lives. It was the same for people during the French
Revolution. No matter who they were – aristocrats singing
in their private clubs or theatres or artisans and the sansculottes
(the working poor) singing in the streets or taverns –
music expressed the way they felt about the dramatic social

WE SHALL
HAVE BREAD! THE WOMEN'S MARCH ON VERSAILLES
by Kirsten Beaudoin
France endured many years of poor harvests during the eighteenth
century. Shortages of wheat, rye, and other grains created
hardship for France’s poor, who relied on bread as the
main portion of their diet. On October 5,1789, a group of
women organized a protest at the city hall in Paris. They
were angry at having their pleas for bread ignored while the
French aristocracy lived in luxury. The demonstration turned
destructive and violent as the mob of women marched to Versailles
to demand that King Louis XVI supply bread for the hungry
people of Paris.
