History of Christmas Mini Unit Study

The familiar customs and symbols of Christmas, such as a brightly lit and decorated pine tree, a festive wreath on the front door and mistletoe hanging above one’s head are just some of the traditions enjoyed during the yuletide season. Christmas is a Christian holiday, of course, but many of these symbols of Christmas originated in pre-Christian cultures. Christmas practices have changed and evolved over the years - it was celebrated in a different manner in early Christian, Medieval and Victorian times. Some of the customs from each era have come down to us today, although every country celebrates the holiday in its own unique way.

In this mini unit, you can: learn about the history of Christmas and how it was celebrated in different ages, read about the origins of popular Christmas symbols, find out about Christmas customs in countries around the world, connect with the Middle Ages by making a traditional plum pudding, have fun with an interactive online Advent calendar and make a delightful assortment of Christmas crafts representing the past as well as today.
