Abner Doubleday is credited as one of the early pioneers of the modern game of baseball, but as history would have it, Doubleday likely was not the game's true inventor.
Perhaps the most famous guy who never invented baseball, Doubleday did still play a role in America's evolution. He became a captain, lieutenant colonel and major general in the United States Army - serving largely during the Civil War with his strong opposition to slavery.
As for America's favorite pastime, the origin is still up for debate. Doubleday is, and may forever remain, credited as the Father of Baseball - his hometown of Cooperstown, New York is the site of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
